Board of Directors - What you Should Know

A Board of Directors is comprised of a group of elected or appointed members who govern the activities and oversee the operation of the organization.  

Board of Directors spreadsheet should include:
 
  • Member names
  • Titles
  • Company where member is employed
  • Contact Information (Email and Phone)
 
Board of Directors should:
Consist of a minimum of 5-7 members
Be an odd number to avoid voting ties.
100% Giving. (If those who run the organization do not financially support it, why should a grantor?) 
Follow Roberts Rules of Order
 
Tip: Grant applications often require the signature of the Board President for final submission. (Watch grant deadlines and schedules to ensure signers are available.) 
 

BOARD OF DIRECTORS RECRUITMENT

​Board members are often solicited based on their title or position within a certain company; this is not always the best option. A nonprofit organization must have a WORKING Board of Directors. Look for members who are passionate about the organization, its' mission and recognize their role as a critical part of fundraising efforts.
