What is a blog? Weblogs first entered the scene in the early 90's. They were designed as a platform for individuals to be able to write and share random thoughts, stories, and ideas via the internet. The blogging arena of today has evolved. Bloggers can potentially attract thousands of followers, views and for some, generate a substantial income from advertising dollars.
So........you want to write a blog? Here are some tips to help you get started.
Step 1
Choose your topic and write what you know!
- Hobby
- Interest (such as travel)
- How To (such as cooking or home repairs)
- Experiences
- Humor
- Random
Step 2
Create a blog site. There are many free blog/website builders available on the internet. Research them to find one that fits your personality and skill level. Personally, I like website builders. This provides a landing page while allowing you to add a blog tab.
Step 3
Choose a domain name. Most blog building sites allow you to choose a domain name for free. You can always purchase a specific domain name and transfer it to your site later.
Step 4
Complete the AUTHOR and ABOUT section of your blog to inform readers about your interests and experience.
Step 5
Add PURCHASED photos. Copyright infringement is very real, illegal and can have costly repercussions. There are many great, affordable photo purchase sites. Also use a search engine to find public domain photos. Never pull a photo from the internet and assume it is free.
Step 6
Add a CONTACT page. Requiring comments be approved before posting can reduce spam comments.
Step 7
Write two or three short blog posts to get your feet wet.
Step 8
Finally, be social! Create social media pages with your blog name or just share posts on your personal page. Develop broad shoulders, especially with controversial subjects. Understand that every comment will not be favorable. Do not argue a comment on social media as this will only result in more views, more comments and ultimately end with you deleting your post.
Step 9
Engage your intended audience with intriguing blog titles. The first paragraph must capture the attention of your target audience. How? Ask a question, make a statement, or stir emotions to keep them reading.
Step 10
For personal blogs, be yourself. Speak from your experience. Tell your story in first person. Add humor when appropriate, relax and enjoy your blogging journey. As a side note, avoid using AI, she tends to be a bit pretentious.
